Condominiums are more popular than ever! Is trading your house for a condo right for you? Consider the following:
Maintenance – While not exactly maintenance free, condos come with far less of a honey-do list than a traditional home and yard. Most association fees cover basic lawn care, snow removal, landscaping and general upkeep. Is cutting the grass your idea of relaxation on the weekend or will you happily give up this chore?
Sense of Community – Condos come ready with a set of new acquaintances and neighbors. With many residents in a small footprint, you will have plenty of opportunities for new friends, and most condo communities have some organized activities. While participation is certainly not required, if you are looking for privacy, it may be harder to find in a condo community.
Security – Many condominium complexes have security features such as cameras, security gates or even foot patrols. In addition, the proximity of units can create a more secure environment. In a multi-level or high-rise complex there may be secure elevator access or a full-time lobby attendant. If security is a concern for you, this may be well worth the trade-off of carrying groceries up the stairs or taking the dog out via elevator.
Community Regulations – Most condominium associations have regulations that may cover issues such as pets, noise, access, use of facilities, parking and many others. These regulations keep the condo community safe, pleasant and clean. Check to be sure the regulations suit your lifestyle. If you want to customize the exterior of your home or have many vehicles to park, a traditional home may be a better fit.
